Janie Deloris Williams-Brown

December 15, 1948 — January 25, 2025

Janie Deloris Brown was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Janie was born on December 15, 1948, in Florence, South Carolina, to Martha Ellen Graham and Maxie "Son" Williams. She was one of seven siblings: Mack (Margret) Williams, Minister Modestine (Luis) Brody, Janet (Roy) Hyman, Jeanette Williams, Minister James (Ruby) Wilken Williams, and Etrulia (Franklin) Ellen Frierson. She grew up in a big, loving family, learning the values of faith, love, and resilience that shaped her into the remarkable woman we all cherished.

Janie attended Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. Upon graduating, she began a career in education as a special education instructor with the Florence District One School system.

Janie shared her life and adventures with her loving husband of 44 years, Isaiah, a proud army veteran. The family lived in several places around the country and the world, including Georgia, Tennessee, Alaska, Kentucky, and even Berlin, Germany. These years of travel gave the family countless memories of adventures, laughter, and shared experiences that deepened their bond.

Janie and Isaiah’s travels did not end at retirement. Together, they frequently road-tripped to visit family and friends, rarely missing family events like weddings and graduations, no matter the distance. Their experiences together were a testament to their love and partnership—a love that stood as an example for all who knew them.

The family was always at the center of Janie’s heart. She loved spending time with her family and poured her heart and soul into raising her children Clarence (Twyla), Anthony (D’Metria), Poncho (Chantel), and Tracey (Fred) and loving on her 13 grandchildren: Terrez, Destiny, Shawn, Philip, Timothy, Thomas, Janay, Nevaeh, Fredrick, Mya, Trey, Aniyah, and Lailah. Grandma Janie had a way of making each grandchild feel like the favorite, always there with a smile, encouragement, and unconditional love.

Janie lived a life filled with love, grace, and devotion. She had an extraordinary ability to find beauty in the simple things—whether journaling, drawing, or shopping at Goodwill for the perfect little treasure. Her love for shopping wasn’t just about the find, it was her way of bringing joy to others. She would often surprise her family, especially her grandchildren, with thoughtful gifts that made each of them feel special.

Janie’s gentle, quiet presence was matched by her profound impact on everyone she met. She was a prayer warrior, lifting others in prayer daily, whether they were loved ones or strangers in need. She and her sister Modestine often had weekly prayer calls and were prayer intercessors with a group of friends, covering family and friends with faith and love. Janie maintained a very close connection to her siblings, regularly talking on the phone to each of them. She embodied the selflessness of a Proverbs 31 woman "clothed in strength and dignity," her words always full of kindness and wisdom.

She also had a fun, competitive side, especially when it came to Scrabble. With her impressive memory and huge vocabulary, she was a serious competitor. But even during a game, Janie found ways to teach patience, the value of learning, and how to laugh at life’s little frustrations.

Reflecting on her life, one must remember her quiet strength, unwavering faith, and endless love. She modeled the importance of family, the joy of simple pleasures, and the power of prayer. Her legacy is one of compassion, grace, and devotion, and she will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her.

Her life was a gift, and her spirit will forever inspire family and friends to live with the same love, faith, and selflessness that she did. She will be deeply missed but always cherished.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Martha Ellen Graham and Maxie Williams, and her sister, Etrulia Ellen Frierson.
