William Earl McElrath was born on May 14, 1937, in Morris Chapel, Tennessee, to the union of Rellie Hardin and Willie Mae Burge. He departed this life on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, Tennessee.
Educated at Dunbar High School in Savannah, Tn., William was a dedicated member of Saint Paul AME Church. On November 12, 1966, he married the love of his life, Paula J. Russell McElrath, and together they built a legacy of love and devotion.
For over 30 years, William was employed by General Motors Company, where his diligence and commitment were deeply valued. After retiring, he filled his days with activities that brought him joy—caring for his lawn, working on automobiles, tackling home renovation projects, and traveling. William was truly a jack of all trades, embracing each new challenge with enthusiasm. He also found great delight in sharing stories, leaving a legacy of laughter and wisdom.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Mae Burge and Rellie Hardin; his beloved wife, Paula McElrath on November 10, 2021; and his siblings, Alvin Parker McElrath, Willie McElrath, Mary Cunningham, Rellie Hardin, Jr., and Charlotte Stevalene Broyles “Tillie”.
Those left to cherish his memories include his children: Tracey Lynn Williams, Lisa Dawn Miller, William Aaron(Umika) McElrath, LaWonder Siner, grandchildren: Ashley L. Williams (Mills), Donovan L. Williams, Zion McElrath, Aaron Cortez McElrath, Kadaisha Grigsby, and LaMya Thompson; his two brothers, Leon McElrath and Willard Laster; as well as a host of relatives, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
William’s hands built not only with tools but with kindness. His heart traveled far and wide in love and generosity. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always cherished.
